THE BOOK OF NUMBERS. By Timothy R.Ashley. Second Edition. The New International Commentary on the Old Testament. Grand Rapids, MI: William B. Eerdmans, 2022. Pp. 656. Paper, $60.00.

Nearly thirty years after the original, Timothy R. Ashley has revised his exceptional commentary on Numbers in the New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT). The most significant change from the original has been the incorporation of the most up-to-date research on Numbers, which alone makes this resource valuable to students and scholars alike. His work with the text itself has been updated, but it has not altered the intent of the original—he aims to explore the book according to his theological conviction that despite the potentially complex process of development of the book, “God was at work to bring his people the final form of the text” (10). Those primarily interested in exploring earlier stages of production may find the commentary only tangentially relevant. However, he offers erudite engagement with the wide range of approaches to Numbers. This tool will be valuable to scholars, pastors, and students in general, but it will prove useful especially to those for whom exploration of the final form of the text is the crux of engagement.
