Lattice Structures as an Energy‐Absorbing Component for Impact Loads
ABSTRACT Lattice structures allow the adopted design of material properties, for example, for impact protection systems. This work deals specifically with the energy absorption of selected lattice types from sudden impact loads. Split‐Hopkinson pressure bar tests show that lattice structures can spread the impact load over time. This reduces the peak value of the impact load. In our experiments, Octet and BFCC lattices with different volume fractions are compared. The structures are made of a viscoelastic polymer and are, therefore, reusable and sustainable.
