Ultra-Wideband Silicon-Based Active Phase Shifter

This paper presents an ultra-wideband active phase shifter covering S, C, X, and Ku bands. The proposed phase shifter consists of the ultra-wideband balun, I/Q signal generation module, vector modulation and control module, and compensation amplifier. The ultra-wideband balun uses an improved Marchand balun structure to ensure low amplitude and phase error across the frequency range of 2-18GHz. The I/Q quadrature signal generation module utilizes the polyphase filter (PPF) to extend bandwidth and enhance the signal accuracy. Besides, the vector modulation and control module achieve high-precision vector modulation functions through switch-controlled Gilbert cells and current mirrors. The function of the compensation amplifier is to optimize the gain flatness of this phase shifter. Simulation results show that the ultra-wideband phase shifter exhibits an insertion loss of less than 8dB and the RMS phase error is less than 2.28° over 2-18GHz. The chip area is 1.15mm2. The power consumption of the phase shifter is 36.35mW from a 1V voltage supply and the core circuit power consumption is 3.84mW.
