Recent advances on treatment and valorization of tequila vinasse
Tequila vinasse is the liquid residue produced by the tequila productionindustry. The discharge of this residue to the environment is problematic to its highorganic matter content and acidity. Common treatment processes, such as anaerobicdigestion, help mitigate these issues while producing valuable by-products like biogas.Recent research suggests that multi-stage anaerobic digestion, where acidogenesisand methanogenesis occur in separate reactors, can enhance process stability, methane production and energy recovery compared to single-stage processes. Thesestudies highlight the potential for further valorization of tequila vinasse, including theproduction of bioplastics, offering promising avenues for waste management andresource recovery.
