Heat Transfer in Formula SAE Brake Discs

This paper aims in do an analysis about the heat transfer in brake discs, evaluate the convection effect, compare the steady state analysis with the transientstates. Brake discs play a critical role in vehicle safety and performance. In this study,it was investigated heat dissipation in Formula SAE brake discs, considering analyticalcalculations to convection coefficient and doing a numerical simulation using finiteelement method. First, an investigation about the phenomenon of heat transfer andcalculation was done using methods founds in scientific literature, then analyticalcalculations about the heat flux caused by the friction was done, in addiction to braketime and convection coefficient too. After that a thermic simulation was done usingfinite element methods using transient state and stead state. Furthermore, to transientstate simulation, was done a simulation without the convection to evaluate theconvection effect in refrigeration.

Abstract

This paper aims in do an analysis about the heat transfer in brake discs, evaluate the convection effect, compare the steady state analysis with the transientstates. Brake discs play a critical role in vehicle safety and performance. After that a thermic simulation was done usingfinite element methods using transient state and stead state. Furthermore, to transientstate simulation, was done a simulation without the convection to evaluate theconvection effect in refrigeration.
