Production of Ethylene Glycol by Catalytic Conversion Ni-Raney Lignocellulosic Biomass: Process, Challenges and Prospects
: Ethylene glycol, used as an antifreeze and in the production of PET, ismostly produced from ethylene oxide derived from fossil fuels, which highlights theneed for more sustainable alternatives. One promising route is production fromlignocellulosic biomass via catalytic conversion with Raney Nickel. This study reviewsthis approach, analyzing processes, limitations and future perspectives. The researchinvolved a literature review in Google Scholar, The Lens and Google Patents, focusing on publications from the last 14 years. The results indicate that, althoughthe conversion is a promising route, there are significant challenges, includingcatalyst inhibition by lignin and the presence of impurities and coke, which impair itsefficiency.
