The Effect of Family Support for Employment on Employment Intention for People with Developmental Disabilities : The Mediating Effect of Self-reliance Will
The purpose of this study is to verify whether the will to stand independently has a mediating effect in the relationship between family support and employment intention of the unemployed with developmental disabilities. To this end, the original data of the 2023 Work and Life Status Survey for the Disabled by the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled were used, and the analysis targets were 1,046 people with developmental disabilities (290 autistic disabilities and 756 intellectual disabilities) aged 15 or older. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, and correlation analysis were performed as analysis methods, and mediating effects were verified using a single parameter model. In addition, the significance of indirect effects was examined through the Sobel Test using SPSS 24.0. As a result of the analysis, it was found that family support had a significant positive effect on the will to self-reliance, and the will to self-reliance had a significant positive effect on the willingness to work of the people with developmental disabilities. In addition, as a result of Sobel Test analysis, the indirect effect of family support on employment intention through self-reliance intention was verified to be significant. This study empirically confirmed the importance of family support in the employment of people with developmental disabilities, and based on this, policy and practical suggestions such as strengthening the family support system and preparing programs to promote the will to become independent were presented. These results can be used as specific and practical basic data to support the employment and independence of people with developmental disabilities.
