Parallel Multi-Hole Collimator Design with Octagonal and Square Hole Arrays

Gamma cameras are widely used in the field of nuclear medicine, typically employing parallel hole collimators. The spatial resolution and sensitivity of these collimators vary depending on the size and length of the holes, as well as the thickness of the septa. Traditionally, collators with hexagonal holes have been commonly used. In this study, we designed a collimator that incorporates a combination of octagonal and square holes, and we compared its spatial resolution and sensitivity with those of existing collimators. The results indicate that the designed collimator achieved an average spatial resolution improvement of 0.31 % and a sensitivity improvement of 7.27 % compared to the ELEGP collimator. This study demonstrates that a new collimator design can enhance the performance of gamma cameras. It is anticipated that further improvements in performance can be achieved by designing collimators that utilize various hole shapes.
