A New System for Measuring Pressure Distribution on Kayak Footrests Using Velostat

The pressure exerted by the feet on the footrests of the kayak is a very important factor in kayaking performance. Traditional measurement methods are limited by their bulkiness and lack of portability, while recent wireless systems are still complex and intrusive. This study presents a new system for measuring the pressure distribution on the kayak footrests using Velostat, a piezoresistive material. To reduce mechanical interferences and correct measurement uncertainties between adjacent cells, a specialized application of Markov Random Field concepts and Gibbs sampling is implemented. Our results demonstrate that the system is capable to detect high and low-pressure areas and to quantify the pressure on the unsupported side.
