Jesus and Young Generation - A Study of Jesus and Youths in the Gospels -
God has used young generations throughout history to advance His will. In particular, when we examine the usage of νέος and its derivatives in the New Testament, despite their youth and inexperience, the New Testament continues to show them affection, anticipation, and support until they take on the ministry of the kingdom of God. In particular, in the ministry of Jesus as revealed in the Gospels, the young generation is the object of His special interest and affection. This is clearly revealed in the rich young ruler who came to see Jesus (Matt. 19:16-22; Mark 10:17-31; Luke 18:18-30), the raising of the dead young man in Nain (Luke 7:11-17), the parable of the father who found his lost son (Luke 15:11-32), and the young man who followed Jesus from Gethsemane wearing only a linen blanket (Mark 14:51-52). The narrative of the rich young ruler who came to Jesus clearly reveals Jesus’ love and expectations for the young generation. It also shows that He is waiting for the young generation who acknowledge their lack and humbly follow Jesus. The narrative of Jesus resurrecting the widow of Nain’s only son shows Jesus’ sovereign will and power to revive the young generation. The parable of the lost son appeals to the young generation to quickly repent and return to the Father. It also asks the young people who have already been called to accept their brothers and rely on the Father’s love and grace. Finally, the young man who followed Jesus wearing a linen blanket is presumed to be Mark, and he urges them not to stop at the weak and shameful failures of their youth, but to grow and grow further. These points of contact between Jesus and the young generation in the Gospels clearly show how much love, concern, expectations, and vision both Jesus and the church have for the young generation.
