Metalens integrated Maxwellian view display for augmented reality glasses

The vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) remains a significant challenge for augmented reality (AR) glasses. Here, we present a novel metalens-enabled, waveguide-type Maxwellian view display that overcomes the VAC. Our design comprises an in-coupling grating and a 3x3 mm2 metalens fabricated on the 0.7 mm thick glass substrate to focus guided light precisely at the eye pupil, enabling direct retinal image formation. This approach ensures clear virtual image perception regardless of eye accommodation state, eliminating the VAC. Experimental results confirm consistent image clarity across camera focusing distances from 0.5m (2D) to 4.3m (0.23D). While current limitations include chromatic aberration and field of view constraints, our work represents a promising direction toward compact, comfortable AR display technology with reduced visual fatigue and enhanced social acceptability.
