Expanding perception: repurposed passthrough VR goggles for UV-NIR visualization in optical research

We present a cost-effective method to simultaneously protect eyes and visualize ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR) light sources by repurposing commercial passthrough VR goggles (Meta Quest 3). By physically removing the integrated IR cutoff filters, we extend the device’s camera sensitivity from a baseline of 400–780nm to a broader 350–1100nm range. This modification permits real-time imaging of invisible beams—such as 780nm LED arrays—within the headset’s full field-of-view, offering effectively infinite optical density without requiring traditional laser goggles or separate beam viewers. To accommodate a variety of laboratory tasks, we designed a 3D-printed filter wheel attachment that enables researchers to quickly swap in excitation cleanup filters for fluorescence or neutral density (ND) filters for high-power sources. Compared to multiple sets of specialized goggles and beam cards, our system provides a more economical ($499) and versatile alternative, reducing replacement costs and improving situational awareness in low-light lab conditions. Initial tests in designing a high-power 780nm LED light source for image-guided surgery verified the system’s practicality, enhancing operator safety and workflow efficiency. Future efforts will expand on sensor integrations (e.g., InGaAs or perovskite enhancements) and software functionality to further optimize this repurposed VR platform for advanced optical research applications.
