Study on Rain Attenuation Based on Different Raindrop Size Distributions

The specific attenuation model introduced in Rec. ITU-R P.838-3 has been widely used for the rain attenuation prediction. Comparisons of measurements around the world reveals that the different raindrop size distributions cause the estimates using the prediction model in Rec. ITU-R P.838-3 could not agree the rainfall attenuations in all cases. In this paper, a rain attenuation estimation method is proposed for generally applied rain drop size distributions as complementary approaches to Rec. ITU-R P.838-3. This method both could be applied to the frequencies between 1–1000 GHz.

Abstract

The specific attenuation model introduced in Rec. ITU-R P.838-3 has been widely used for the rain attenuation prediction. Comparisons of measurements around the world reveals that the different raindrop size distributions cause the estimates using the prediction model in Rec. ITU-R P.838-3 could not agree the rainfall attenuations in all cases. In this paper, a rain attenuation estimation method is proposed for generally applied rain drop size distributions as complementary approaches to Rec. ITU-R P.838-3. This method both could be applied to the frequencies between 1–1000 GHz.
