Improved Radiation Performance of Printed Monopole Antenna Using Wideband Planar AMC Surface

A low profile, gain enhanced printed monopole antenna loaded with artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is presented. In this work, an AMC structure with wide bandwidth is proposed as the reflector of printed antenna for the purpose of electrical performance improved. The AMC surface is employed as the ground plane of the proposed antenna instead of the perfect electric conductor (PEC) ground plane in the traditional antenna. By loading the AMC structure as reflector, the radiation performance of the printed monopole antenna is enhanced. The impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is in the frequency range of 5.01-8.96 GHz (S11<-10 dB) with the size of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{30}\mathbf{mm} \ast\mathbf{30}\mathbf{mm} \ast\mathbf{6}\mathbf{mm}$</tex>, which the height is about <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{0.01}\boldsymbol{\lambda}$</tex> at 6 GHz. The relative impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna can achieve 56.55%, in addition, the gain in the frequency bandwidth range have an average increase of 4dB. Finally, the actual product of antenna and measured results is provided, which are consistent with the simulated results.
