Battery Charging System Design with Modified Boost Type Rectifier fed LLC Resonant Converter

In this study, a battery charge system with a 3 kW output power was designed using a half bridge LLC resonant converter for the Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery preferred in electric vehicle applications. The system aims to reduce switching losses and increase system efficiency by using one of the soft switching techniques, Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS). In the single phase grid-fed system, Modified Boost type Rectifier (MBR), one of the bridgeless boost type rectifier was used as the power factor correction (PFC) circuit. It was observed that the MBR circuit prevented circulation current in Semi Bridgeless Boost type Rectifier (SBBR) circuit and it provided ease of control due to the use of fewer switches. The average current control method was used in the MBR circuit. The total harmonic distortion (THD) value was calculated as 1.33% in the system operated with PFC circuit. The designed system was tested on a battery with 55V/15Ah capacity in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
