Material Selection in Transformer Core Design for Cost and Performance Analysis
Transformers play a vital role in power distribution and efficiency; selecting the correct core material is essential for optimizing performance and cost. This study examines the economic and efficiency aspects of two mostly used cold-rolled grain-oriented electrical steels, H0 and M4. Transformers are designed according to the TEDAŞ MLZ Specifications. This study not only accounts for the material costs associated with H0 and M4 but also highlights additional expenses, including processing and manufacturing costs. The study also compares the no-load losses and the weight of the cores. Understanding the economic and efficiency aspects of material selection can lead to optimized designs that enhance both performance and cost efficiency. To validate no-load losses, no-load losses are also calculated using finite element models of the transformers. This study aims to empower transformer designers and power suppliers to make more strategic material choices based on economic conditions, ultimately leading to optimized transformer designs.
