Beam Scanning Antenna Based on Radiation-Type Intelligent Metasurface
Intelligent metasurfaces have attracted remarkable attention in wireless communication and radar due to their ability to manipulate electromagnetic wave in real time. However, both reflective and transmissive intelligent metasurfaces require an additional feed source, resulting in a relatively high profile and lower efficiency. Therefore, reducing the profile, improving efficiency, and ensuring real-time modulation over the meta-surface are of utmost significance. A radiation-type intelligent metasurface for dynamic beam scanning is proposed in this paper. A pair of PIN diodes is integrated on the element to achieve 1-bit phase manipulating, while power dividers are integrated on the metasurface to form a microstrip network to stimulate the radiation layer. The simulation results elucidate that the radiation-type intelligent metasurface can achieve real-time beam manipulation within the range of ±45°, with an aperture effi-ciency exceeding 20% and an extremely low profile. The novelty of this study lies in the elimination of the external feed required by traditional intelligent metasurfaces. This framework offers significant advantages in terms of low profile, high efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
