Effectiveness of Xenograft in Socket Preservation After Mandibular Third Molar Extraction: A Systematic Review.
Background: Third molar extractions are common dental procedures, but they can lead to complications such as sensitivity in distal side of second molar and bone loss. The use of xenograft materials has been explored to enhance outcomesMethods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on PubMed, Medline, Scopus, and Embase from January 2015 to July 2024. Out of 18,965 relevant articles, only three met the inclusion criteria for our systematic reviewResults: The use of bone putty collagen membrane after third molar (M3M) extraction resulted in significantly greater reductions in pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) gains, particularly in the distal area of the second molar (M2M), compared to spontaneous healing. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, we conclude that the current sample size is insufficient to definitively determine the efficacy of bone putty in enhancing bone formation after third molar extraction. Further research with a larger sample size is warranted to fully explore the potential benefits of this treatment approach.
