Analysis of digital media usage in animations for young children

The purpose of this study is to explore the messages conveyed about digital media usage within animated content targeted at young children by analyzing depictions of digital media in such animations. The research sample consisted of 43 episodes of children’s animations broadcast on public channels during July 2024, featuring scenes that included digital media use. Data collection involved repeated viewings through official broadcasting websites to meticulously record instances of digital media utilization, which were then systematically analyzed. The findings reveal that animated characters utilized digital media functionally for various purposes, engaged in content creation to express their thoughts and imagination, and participated in creative play that transcended digital and non-digital domains. Additionally, the animations depicted interpersonal communication within digital societies, self-presentation on social networking services (SNS), and critical issues such as safety in digital environments, distinguishing truth from falsehoods, and the risks of over-immersion. Themes such as the convenience of robots alongside their limitations and digital divides were also addressed. This study highlights the potential of children’s animations to provide opportunities for young viewers to comprehend the world and to promote responsible digital citizenship through narratives about digital media usage.
