Comorbidities of pediatric vitiligo

Vitiligo is an autoimmune depigmenting skin condition with profound psychosocial impact.Comorbidities, in particular autoimmune disease, have been documented in adults but are less extensively studied in the pediatric population. Here, we review existing practices and literature on comorbid conditions of nonsegmental vitiligo, ''vitiligo vulgaris,'' and present our recommendations for pediatric clinical management.Evidence to date suggests pediatric vitiligo is associated with an increased risk of atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, autoimmune thyroid disease, psychiatric disease, and decreased quality of life.Screening during routine dermatologic care should reflect these risks to allow for appropriate referral and multidisciplinary care.Further investigation is needed to determine whether psoriasis, other autoimmune endocrine disease, hearing loss, and ophthalmologic concerns are additional comorbidities.( JAAD Reviews 2025;3:131-7.
