Study on memorising technical drawings using eye-gaze analysis to improve their rendering by text-to-speech

In this paper, we present a two-phase study with 15 subjects, which consisted of memorising and reproducing three technical drawings in the first phase and three abstract geometric drawings in the second phase, with increasing complexity. An eye-tracking device was used to interpret the form and methods to memorise the drawings. We propose a mathematical formula to express the complexity of a drawing, and then we compare the complexity value with the findings of the experiment, namely regarding memorisation time, number of gaze fixations, and drawing perfection; the latter was expressed using a proposed methodology. The findings of this study relate memorisation time, number of gaze fixations and respective gaze time, and perfection of the redraw with the complexity of the drawings. It also points out how to use text-to-speech methods to render drawings of these types.
