Critical Thinking and Virtual Education: Challenges to Face

Critical thinking and reflective training are fundamental in any disciplinary field, posing a significant challenge for various levels of education, particularly in Latin America. According to UNESCO, critical thinking is one of the four essential competencies for 21st-century education. However, it faces considerable challenges due to the configuration and direction that higher education has taken in contemporary times. This paper provides a hermeneutic perspective from the critical theory of virtual education organization and the space it allows for critical thinking, given its strict alignment with the economic and productive model. In this context, the standardization of content and instructional design is problematized as an obstacle to critical thinking. Finally, alternatives are considered to promote its development in scenarios such as Latin America.
