Enhancing Global Competencies: Exploring the Impact of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) on Student Well being and Academic Development in Latin American Universities
Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is a transformative educational approach that facilitates global collaboration among students from diverse cultural backgrounds. This study examines the impact of implementing health-related activities or projects through COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) on student well-being and academic development across three Latin American universities: ITESM (Mexico), UCC (Colombia), and DUOC UC (Chile). COIL utilizes digital platforms like Zoom and Slack to engage students in joint projects that promote interdisciplinary learning and cross-cultural competence. Research findings highlight varied perceptions of well-being among students across spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual, occupational, and physical dimensions. UCC students reported higher social well-being scores, indicative of a strong community connection, while DUOC UC students exhibited lower spiritual well-being scores, suggesting potential cultural differences in wellness priorities. Moreover, the study explores how COIL influences students' career aspirations and academic satisfaction. It underscores the methodology's role in enhancing professional competencies and preparing students for global citizenship. Despite its benefits, COIL implementation faces challenges such as technological disparities and logistical complexities. Addressing these challenges requires institutional support and strategic planning to maximize educational outcomes. In conclusion, this research contributes to understanding COIL's potential in enriching higher educational experiences and preparing students for global challenges.
