Gain Enhancement of a Double-Sided MIC Technology-Inspired Microstrip Array Antenna Using FSS Reflector

This study investigates incorporating a 7 x 7 frequency selective surface (FSS) reflector array with a double- sided MIC technology-inspired 2x2 microstrip array antenna to enhance performance at a frequency of 10 GHz. Conventional microstrip antennas encounter constraints in enhancing gain without structural alterations. Significantly gain enhancement is achieved by placing the FSS reflector 17 mm (equivalent to beneath the antenna. The combined system achieves a reflection coefficient of less than −30 dB and a gain of 15 dBi, in contrast to 11.9 dBi without the reflector. This demonstrates enhanced directional transmission and signal strength. Because of these improvements, the proposed arrangement is well-suited for telecommunications, RADAR, satellite, and UAV applications. The significant improvements resulting from this integration have been confirmed through extensive simulations.
