RNA Encoding and Raita Algorithm for Misuse Intrusion Detection Method using KDD-Cup99 Dataset
Security has become the highest priority for people and companies in today's networked community. Therefore, efficient security measures are required to secure critical data from outside violations with the big changes in the environment of threats. An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is one of these crucial security tools. IDS is generally used to provide confidentiality, integrity, and availability for data when transmitted over the network, based on preventing unauthorized access to the network. This paper proposed a new misuse intrusion detection system to classify the dataset attacks into four groups, and these groups are Denial of Service (DoS) attack, Probe attack, Remote to Local (R2L) attack, and User to Root (U2R) attack, this done based on RNA encoding and Raita algorithm, where the proposed method has two steps: keys extraction for attack groups and attack classification. The RNA encoding is used to convert dataset records to RNA sequences; this is done by dividing the dataset attributes into nominal and numerical. The nominal are protocol, service, and flag attributes, while the numerical are the rest of the attributes. Then, the keys for each attack type are extracted separately. Finally, the Raita algorithm is used to classify the testing records as either a DoS attack, Probe attack, R2L attack, U2R attack, or normal. The evaluation of the proposed method is done based on DR, FAR, and accuracy calculated based on keys for each attack type.
