Mediating Effects of Self-Determination Motivation in the Relationship between the Type of Coaching Behavior and Fear of Failure Perceived by Poomsae Player

Purpose This study was conducted to verify the mediating effect of self-determination motivation in the structural relationship between the types of coaching behaviors perceived by players and the fear of failure. Methods To achieve the purpose of the study, a survey was conducted on 267 Poomsae players registered with the Korea Sports Council, and the structural relationships and mediating effects were verified using the SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 20.0 statistical programs based on the collected data. Results First, among the coaching behavior types recognized by Poomsae players, controlling coaching has a positive effect on fear of failure. Second, among the coaching behavior types recognized by Poomsae players, autonomy support has a positive effect on autonomous motivation, a sub-factor of self-determination motivation, and controlling coaching has a positive effect on controlling motivation and a negative effect on autonomous motivation. Third, controlling motivation, a sub-factor of self-determination motivation of Poomsae players, has a positive effect on fear of failure. Fourth, among the coaching behavior types recognized by Poomsae players, controlling motivation, a sub-factor of self-determination motivation, mediates the relationship between controlling coaching types and fear of failure. Conclusion In the process of suppressing the autonomy of Poomsae players and causing a high level of pressure, negative psychological states such as fear of failure appear. Therefore, the more appropriate autonomy is given to Poomsae players and the more internal motivation is emphasized in terms of motivation, the more positive psychological states can be maintained. Based on these research results, effective strategies can be established for the holistic growth of players and for improving their performance.
