Nutritional Status, Dietary Behavior, And Lifestyle Practices Of Patients Undergoing Treatment Of Type 2 Diabetes-A Hospital-Based Observational Study

Diabetes mellitus, namely type 2 diabetes (T2DM), constitutes a significant challenge for health systems worldwide.According to the 2019 Diabetes Atlas of the International Diabetes Federation 463 million adults are currently living with diabetes (1 in 11 individuals worldwide, but 1 in 5 are aged over 65) In India, there are estimated 77 million people above the age of 18 years are suffering from diabetes (type 2) and nearly 25 million are prediabetics (at a higher risk of developing diabetes shortly).More than 50% of people are unaware of their diabetic status which leads to health complications if not detected and treated early. The total number is expected to increase further by 700 million in 2045.The economic impact is huge-driven by the direct costs of treatment and complications, the indirect costs of disability and premature death, and the intangible costs of poor quality of life.National and international guidelines for nutritional and lifestyle recommendations are available together with protocols to guide weight loss to produce long-term T2D remission The proposed strategies (dietary prescription, lifestyle counseling, cognitive behavior therapy), although allinclusive of nutritional components, are markedly different in their approach and goals and should be known by clinicians approaching patients with T2DM.Unhealthy behaviors, including diet and physical activity, coupled with genetic predisposition, drive type 2 diabetes (T2D) occurrence and severity.Recently, it has been observed that diabetes mellitus can have some gender peculiarities and some data show that women have more years of disease on average than their male counterparts and have a higher body mass index (BMI).
