The importance of artificial intelligence in the high school computer science curriculum as evaluated by computer science teachers in the region of Western Macedonia

In the context of 21st-century skills, students need to acquire knowledge and skills related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) due to its rapid integration into society. However, the current Curriculum (Curriculum Framework) does not adequately provide the necessary set of corresponding skills. The purpose of this study is to explore the views of secondary education teachers (High School) regarding the content of the curriculum related to Artificial Intelligence and the teaching strategies for it. The research was conducted through a questionnaire distributed to a sample of 129 computer science teachers in secondary education (High School) in the city of Ptolemaida and surrounding areas from 01.01.24 to 30.03.24. Teachers are dissatisfied with the current Curriculum concerning the teaching content of AI, as it does not enhance students" digital literacy in AI. The curriculum is deemed insufficient in its thematic coverage related to AI education. Consequently, the curriculum should be enriched with several AI-related themes, which should be taught through gamification, project-based collaborative learning, constructivism, and, to a greater extent, experiential learning.
