The article provides a comparative analysis of Soviet and Canadian media coverage of the 1972 USSR - Canada Hockey Summit Series in the context of international relations of the early 1970s. The authors use media perceptions of the Soviet- Canadian hockey battles to examine the transition from the Cold War tensions of the 1960s to détente, exploring the interrelationship of sports, ideology and identity, and the challenges to international cooperation created by the competition between the two political systems.
