Development of a Model to Determine Optimum Unit Capacities and Number of Turbines for a Given Mini-hydro Site and Flow Regime

Mini-hydropower plants offer a promising renewable energy solution for developing countries due to their relatively low investment costs and ability to provide reliable electricity to remote communities. Nevertheless, fine-tuning the layout of these plants with a view to obtaining maximum energy yield at the lowest possible costs is a big challenge. This paper presents a new mathematical model that can be used to determine the optimal unit capacities and number of turbines for a particular mini-hydro site and for a given flow regime. By considering key factors such as available water head, flow regime, equipment efficiencies, expected lifetime and economic parameters such as inflation and discount rate, model gives the most optimum turbine configuration. Graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed to ensure ease of use. Advantages provided by this model include efficiency, optimality, cost effectiveness, ease of use and adaptability, empower decision makers to maximize their benefits by identifying the most cost-effective solution for their mini hydro project. This work contributes to the development of cost-effective renewable energy solutions, thus advancing the transition towards a sustainable energy future.
