Model based Design for the Speed Control of Permamnent Magnet Synchronous Machines
As the adoption of electric vehicles surges, the safety of the energy storage systems within these vehicles is of paramount concern. Lithium-ion battery technology, while efficient, is susceptible to thermal runaway under certain conditions, posing serious safety hazards. This research project aims to address this issue by developing and implementing an advanced safety analysis and risk assessment framework. The core strategy involves the integration of Field-Oriented Control (FOC) with a Digital Motor Control (DMC) kit to manage the electrical and thermal characteristics of EV batteries. Our research combines computer simulation in MATLAB with real-world hardware validation using the Texas Instruments DRV8312 motor control kit. This unique approach offers a comprehensive evaluation of the battery management system. In the simulation phase, we model EV battery systems to simulate various operating conditions and assess potential risks. The FOC control algorithm is fine-tuned to optimize the performance and thermal stability of the battery. Simulations provide insights into how FOC can prevent thermal runaway and enhance battery safety. To validate our findings and ensure real-world applicability, we conduct hardware experiments using the DRV8312 kit, which is capable of precise motor control and monitoring. Through this hardware-in-the-loop testing, we implement FOC strategies on an actual EV battery setup and evaluate the system's performance under dynamic conditions.
