A Programmable Heterogeneous SoC for Industrial IGBT Control

This paper proposes a programmable heterogeneous System on Chip (SoC) designed to control industrial Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs), addressing the growing demand for IGBT monitoring and control in the industrial sector. The design integrates a Microcontroller Unit (MCU) and an embedded FPGA (eFPGA) to enable high-performance real-time control and communication for IGBTs, while also supporting monitoring and prediction algorithms through MCU software programmability. The SoC features an open-source RISC-V instruction set architecture called Xuantie E906 as the MCU, along with an eFPGA that uses an island-type layout. The eFPGA contains 16x16 hardware programmable logic units, providing 2048 four-input Lookup Tables (LUTs). Fabricated using TSMC's 40nm low-power process technology, the chip is packaged in a QFN format. A series of tests validate the basic functions of the SoC chip and the performance of its control protection circuit, achieving a favorable balance in area, frequency, and power consumption. In conclusion, the programmable heterogeneous SoC effectively combines the software flexibility of the MCU with the hardware parallel processing capabilities of the eFPGA, meeting the real-time response and complex computation needs of industrial IGBT control.
