An Alternative Design for the Hidd Intersection Using Flyovers to Reduce Congestion

This study focuses on reducing congestion at the Hidd Intersection, located along the Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which is one of the two main arterial roads in the country. The highway connects to the King Fahad Causeway, serving travelers from Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the junction serves drivers accessing the Hidd District and nearby areas, including Arad, Galali, Amwaj, and Bahrain Airport. Due to its critical location, the intersection experiences significant traffic volume, resulting in frequent delays and congestion. This project proposes implementing two flyovers to replace traditional traffic lights. A comprehensive traffic analysis has been conducted, including traffic counts performed by the Ministry of Works, Bahrain, along with other data collection and analysis methods. This includes reviewing previously proposed designs for the intersection addressing similar issues. The design adheres to the standards set by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The highway design is modeled in Autodesk Civil 3D and includes two flyovers in different directions. Although some traffic in various directions will continue to use the existing traffic lights, the implementation of the flyover design is expected to reduce delay times by approximately 50%. The project will be further developed and modified in certain areas to maximize its effectiveness. Hidd Intersection.
