The Analysis of PPDA to Measure the Intensity of High Pressing in the K League
This study aimed to conduct an in-depth analysis of match indicators and outcomes based on PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action) values. The research focused on all 198 matches from the 2024 K League 1 season (excluding split matches). Descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Kruskal-Wallis H test were used for the statistical analysis. The K League 1 teams showed an average PPDA value of 10.06 per team. Ulsan Hyundai showed the lowest PPDA, while Incheon United had the highest. There was no correlation between PPDA values and goals scored, goals conceded, shots, shots conceded, xG, or xG conceded, but there was a negative correlation with ball possession. Although there was no difference in PPDA between home and away teams, teams that lost had lower PPDA values than those that won or drew. Furthermore, top-split teams showed lower PPDA values compared to bottom-split teams. The findings of this study are significant in providing insights into defensive patterns and pressing intensity, offering valuable information for analyzing defensive tactics in practice.
