Antibacterial Activity, Phytochemical Analysis and GC-MS Investigation of Tephrosia purpurea linn Plant Extracts against clinical pathogens
The present study of Tephrosia purpurea linn belongs to the family Leguminosa (Fabaceae) screened for secondary metabolites to evaluate its antimicrobial activities using standard procedures. The whole extract with decreasing polarity (Methanol, Chloroform, Petroleum ether, Hexane) was tested on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumonae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The same extract was tested against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. The phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of alkaloids, tannins and saponins in the whole extract of T. purpurea Linn. The result showed the whole extract of T. purpurea linn showing significant activity against bacterial test models on comparing with the standard antibacterial like amoxicillin and fluconazole. Antifungal activity was found even in different solvent systems with increasing concentration. The ethanolic extract of T. purpurea contained 30 components, according to the results of GC-MS analysis The results reported in the present work show evidence that the flower of T. purpurea Linn possesses antimicrobial activity.
