Hvilken rolle spiller tandtråd, tandstikkere og interdentalbørster ved approksimal rengøring?
English summary What role do dental floss, toothpicks, and interdental brushes play in interdental hygiene? Nor Tannlegeforen Tid. 2025; 135: 42-5. The accumulation and metabolism of bacteria in dental biofilm are considered the primary aetiological factors of dental caries and periodontal diseases. Regardless of the brushing method used, toothbrushing does not completely remove interdental plaque. It is largely accepted that interdental plaque should be cleaned using interdental cleaning aids, both as a preventive dental care measure and as part of supportive care. Dental floss is the most widely used and studied method of interdental cleaning. However, the evidence suggests that interdental brushing is the most effective method for interdental plaque removal, and is especially indicated in periodontal patients, who are likely to have widened approximal spaces. The scientific evidence for dental floss and for different kinds of toothpicks in oral health prevention is limited. Interdental cleaning is a complex sequential task that requires manual dexterity. The choice of the type of interdental cleaning technique must be made in relation to the characteristics of the interdental spaces and the dental professional should, therefore, guide the patient to the optimal devices considering their specific needs.
