Identification and antibiotics sensitivity of Ochrobactrum anthropi isolated from systemic lupus erythematosus patients in Mosul, Iraq

Aims: The study's overall purpose is to highlight the relevance of Ochrobactrum anthropi as an unusual pathogen newly isolated from systemic lupus erythematosus patients in Mosul, Iraq and confirm its identification by molecular techniques based on 16S rRNA, furthermore determination its sensitivity to the standard antibiotics. Methodology and results:The study was conducted on 60 urine samples collected from 60 diagnosed systemic lupus erythematosus patients who attended Ibn-Sena Educational Hospital in Mosul city and outpatients for six months (November 2021 and April 2022).Samples were cultured on MacConkey agar and blood agar.Fifty-five samples, 91.7% gave positive results (grew the bacteria). Two O. anthropi were isolated at a rate of 3.6%, which was identified by the API E20 system and confirmed the identification with molecular techniques based on 16S rRNA.Both isolates of O. anthropi appeared resistant to doxycycline and nitrofurantoin and variable resistant to meropenem, imipenem, cefotaxime, cefixime and trimethoprim. In contrast, they were sensitive to ceftriaxone, gentamycin, ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: While dealing with immunocompromised patients such as SLE, we should not neglect unusual pathogens like O. anthropi, newly isolated from urinary tract infection from SLE patients in Mosul, Iraq.
