Estimation of serum ferritin level in association with hematological parameters in cutaneous leishmaniosis: A case-control study
Aims: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a parasite infection from sand-fly bites.Superficial skin nodules to severe mucosal tissue damage are among the clinical signs. This study aims to evaluate the serum ferritin levels and hematological film rates in individuals with Cutaneous leishmaniasis.Methodology and results: A case-control study was conducted in Karbala city. The samples comprised 30 individuals infected with cutaneous leishmaniosis aged 10-50 years and 15 healthy persons as a control group.Serum ferritin, some hematological parameters including platelet count (PLT), red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin hematocrit (HCT), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin centration (MCHC) study concentration were assessed for each participant in this study. In patients with CL, there was a significant difference in several hematological markers (RBC, MCHC and MCH) at p-values (0.05, 0.03 and 0.01), but not in others such as ferritin and (HCT, PLT, HGB and MCV) when compared to healthy controls. In addition, male infection is more than in females aged 10-20 at infection with CL disease. Conclusion, significance and impact of study:There is a significant difference in some hematological markers like MHC, MCHC and HTC in CL patients, whereas their serum ferritin does not entirely change significantly.
