Intelligent English Semantic Recognition System Based on Multimodal Fuzzy Systems

This study, based on the theory of modal system evaluation, explores the interpersonal meaning of modal verbs in English discourse. Traditional research is mainly based on Halliday's modal theory, focusing on the classification and orientation of modal systems, while neglecting the evaluative significance of modal verbs. On the contrary, evaluation theory studies various attitudes and emotional intensities in discourse from a semantic perspective, providing a new theoretical perspective for interpersonal meaning. The main issues of this study are divided into three aspects: conducting a detailed analysis of the distribution characteristics of modal verbs; Based on evaluation theory, conduct in-depth research on the distribution of evaluation meanings of modal verbs in the three systems of attitude, intervention, and hierarchy; Explore how the author constructs interpersonal meaning through modal verbs with evaluative meaning. Through constructing a corpus of 140 editorials selected from The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Observer, and Reuters, and applying the Antconc tool, we found that modal verbs with medium and high magnitudes were used the most frequently, while affirmative form modal verbs were significantly more frequent than negative form. The highest proportion of modal verbs are used in intervening resources, indicating that the author constructs a dialogue space through modal verbs and interacts with readers to achieve the purpose of persuasion. At the same time, the use of resources in judgment is relatively high. Modal verbs of different magnitudes are flexibly used to regulate the tone of evaluation and further express the author's attitude and position. The research results have verified the feasibility and explanatory power of evaluation theory in the study of interpersonal meaning in modal systems, providing new perspectives and methods for the study of modal systems. Meanwhile, this study has positive implications for improving people's ability to appreciate English discourse and provides useful insights for the teaching of English modality systems. This study not only enriches the research scope of modal verbs, but also provides a profound understanding of interpersonal communication mechanisms.
