Improving Communication for People with Speech Disabilities: Exploring Context-Aware Recommendation Systems in Assistive Technology
Assistive technology is essential in reducing challenges for individuals with disabilities, promoting independence and participation in daily life. It includes a wide range of tools, such as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, mobility aids, visual supports, and adaptive software, aimed at aligning individuals’ abilities with environmental demands. As technology evolves, so do assistive devices, adapting to the diverse needs of different disabilities, ages, and functional abilities. Context-aware recommendation systems (CARS) show great potential in improving communication for those with speech disabilities. These systems use contextual information like location, time, and social settings to deliver tailored communication aids, enhancing user independence. When applied to AAC devices, CARS can significantly change interactions by offering context-specific suggestions, such as words or phrases suitable for a user’s current environment or social situation. This personalized approach improves communication by aligning with users’ routines and social interactions. Our literature review on CARS in assistive technology investigates current research and developments in this field, focusing on foundational theories, algorithms, applications, and limitations. It aims to uncover how these technologies can be harnessed to improve communication for individuals with limited speech capabilities. Ultimately, this review emphasizes the transformative role of CARS in assistive technology, providing new avenues for more effective and autonomous communication for those with speech disabilities.
