Extracting alkaloids from medicinal herbs and studying their biological effectiveness against Staphylococcus aureus
Due to the fact that they are more readily available and less expensive compared to contemporary medications, medicinal herbs are used extensively throughout society. Numerous phytochemicals with demonstrated or potential biological activity are recognized; however, the presence of numerous distinct chemical substances in a single plant reduces the effectiveness of employing the entire plant. Preventing assessing the effects of these substances, which are present in a broad range of plants, in a thorough scientific investigation to ascertain their safety and efficacy. The objective of this research was to quantify the alkaloids present in the aqueous extract of ten varieties of medicinal plants that are found in local markets and examine their biological efficacy in combating Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results indicated that, at 124.9 µg/gm, the chamomile plant's (Matricaria chamomilla) aqueous extract had the highest concentration of alkaloids, succeeded by the fenugreek plant's (Trigonella foenum-graecum) extract at 94.5 µg/gm. The lowest concentration of alkaloids in ginger (Zingiber officinale) extract was 5.7 µg/gm. biological efficacy experiments showed that the Cucurbita extract did not show any inhibition against bacteria at all concentrations, while the extracts of Piper nigrum, Nigella sativa, and Trigonella foenum-graecum showed inhibition against bacteria at all concentrations. As for the rest of the extracts, their effect varied depending on the concentrations, as the bacteria showed resistance with increasing dilution.
