Smart IoT-Enabled Tap Water Leakage Monitoring System with Mobile Integration for Sustainable Water Management

The growing threat of water scarcity and climate change leads to the urgent need for effective water conservation for better tomorrow. The detection of tap water leakages at the household level is the first step towards water conservation. This paper introduces a Smart IoT-Enabled Tap Water Leakage Monitoring System designed to enhance domestic water conservation through real-time monitoring. The proposed system uses sensors to track water flow rate from the tap and notifies when the water flow rate is very slow, which might be due to damaged water tap or someone used the tap but the tap was not fully closed. When the tap is in use, the device sends the data to the Thing Speak cloud, which maintains the statistics of the usage of water allowing the user to access real time and historical data regarding water usage on a mobile application. The mobile integration uses wireless communication technology to interface an Arduino-based controller with the user’s smart phone, enabling quick user intervention in real-time. This way of working not only reduces water waste, but also makes people more conscious about their own water usage and encourages pro-active use. The paper explains the system design, implementation and potential impacts of this technology to facilitate large scale sustainable water conservation practices.
