Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption Modeling and Range Estimation using Different Topographical Drive Cycles

The rapid evolution of electric vehicles (EVs) brings forth technological advancements that significantly affect their performance. The efficiency of EVs is greatly impacted by two critical factors: the vehicle’s range and energy consumption per kilometer. Drive cycles (DCs) play a pivotal role in the design of EVs for assessing vehicle performance in terms of emissions and operational standards. This paper conducts a comparative analysis of an electric four-wheeler SUV using the standard DCs to evaluate energy consumption and predict the vehicle range. The vehicle model, implemented in MATLAB SIMULINK, is validated against the publicly available energy consumption data with the Modified Indian drive cycle (MIDC) and other standard DCs. The range obtained using MIDC is 272.6 km with an average deviation of less than 1% when compared to MIDC certified range of 275 km. The range estimated by MIDC is more than other well-known DCs worldwide. The findings presented in this paper aim to contribute valuable insights into the optimization of electric vehicle performance, taking into account the diverse driving conditions and standards represented by different drive cycles.
