Abstract 368: Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor‐1 4G/5G Polymorphism ‐ An Under‐recognized Cause of Acute Ischemic Stroke Due To Hypercoagulability
Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor‐1 (PAI‐1) levels and activity inversely corelates with fibrinolysis and has been associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease and acute ischemic stroke. The 4/5 Guanosine (4G/5G) polymorphism in the promoter region influences plasma PAI‐1 antigen levels, with the 4G homozygotes having the highest levels and 5G homozygotes carrying the lowest levels. The 4G/4G and 4G/5G (heterozygote) alleles have been associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke and carry association with triglyceride metabolism and atherosclerosis as well.
