Abstract 410: Starfield Ischemia and Cerebral Fat Embolism in Sickle Cell Crisis
Fat embolism syndrome (FES) resulting from bone marrow necrosis is a rare but severe complication of sickle cell disease. This condition can lead to devastating strokes, often underdiagnosed in patients and typically recognized only at autopsy. Symptoms of bone pain, respiratory distress, fever, acute kidney injury, and neurologic features including altered mental status should raise suspicion for FES. We present a unique case of cerebral fat embolism ischemia in a patient experiencing a sickle cell crisis.
