Abstract 095: Emergent Endovascular Deconstruction: A Rescue Therapy for Delayed Presentation of Vertebral Artery Injury
Vertebral artery injury is a potentially devastating complication of cervical spine surgery, occurring with an overall incidence of 1.4%. Patients undergoing a posterior instrumented approach are at a higher risk. The sequelae of these injuries can range from mild immediate bleeding to severe complications such as brainstem stroke, quadriparesis, and death. Formation of a pseudoaneurysm is a rare but serious complication. There is no established consensus on the optimal treatment for vertebral artery injuries, although microvascular surgical ligation is often recommended. Endovascular treatment options typically focus on either reconstructive or deconstructive methods, depending on the anatomy and the presence of established collaterals.
