The Aesthetic Characteristics of the Ancient Chinese Poetry Art Song, Song of Autumn (秋之歌)
This study analyzes the aesthetic characteristics of Song of Autumn, an art song based on ancient Chinese poetry and lyrics, created by the famous Chinese composer Luo Zhongrong in the early 1960s. The work is based on the “Three Poems” by the Tang Dynasty poet Du Mu and includes three pieces: Mountain Walk(山行), On the Road to Nanling (南陵道中), and Sending Off Judge Han to Yangzhou (寄揚州韓綽判官). The summary of the analysis of the aesthetic characteristics of Song of Autumn is as follows:First, in terms of artistic imagery and sentiment, all three pieces beautifully depict the scenery of late autumn through varying forms of accompaniment and melodic lines. Second, the aesthetic value embedded in the lyrics is revealed through the portrayal of forest landscapes, a woman with red sleeves, and reflections on the 24-bridge scene. Third, the expressive techniques accompanying the singing are manifested through the use of rich piano harmonies, double-note melodies in triplets, and ornamented notes, reflecting the characteristics of Chinese poetic language. Additionally, the three pieces in Song of Autumn also demonstrate aesthetic qualities in terms of rhythm, pronunciation, vocal technique, training methods, and stage effects. Thus, Song of Autumn can be considered an art song that beautifully embodies literary, musical, and sentimental beauty.
