Performance Evaluation of Fuzzy Logic based Temperature Control using Raspberry Pi for Hemodialysis

During standard hemodialysis (HD) treatment, there is a possibility of a slight increase in body temperature, which can result in complications and even mortality. Controlling the temperature is crucial for minimizing complications. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of studies on improved temperature controller designs. Hence, it is the intention of this work to introduce the development of an effective dialysate temperature control module (DTCM) prototype providing stable body temperature during the HD treatment. In this paper, a fuzzy logic-based temperature controller prototype similar to the heat exchanger model has been proposed and implemented on a Raspberry Pi 3 microcontroller. The performance of fuzzy logic-based temperature control parameters was optimized through experiments with numerous designs. Optimum performance was found in the fuzzy logic design with a symmetrical rule base and the highest number of overlapping triangular membership functions. However, the optimized design shows a significant improvement in accuracy (±0.125°C) compared to the accuracy (±0.5°C) of the published experimental study. The results from this paper provide a better understanding of the implementation and optimization of fuzzy logic control in a cost-effective microcontroller, the Raspberry Pi, and a motivation factor to implement it in DTCM prototype.
