The Function of YouTube Subtitles from a Communication Perspective: Focusing on the Comedy Genre

This study analyzes the communicative role of subtitles on YouTube, focusing on “interactive communication,” a key feature of digital language culture. Specifically, it examines how subtitles facilitate information delivery and rapport-building―two central functions of communication. Through an analysis of subtitles in the YouTube comedy channel < Mingggo Ballaal >, the study finds that creators build rapport with viewers by interpreting and representing characters’ emotions in subtitles and adding evaluative comments on characters’ actions or dialogue. By selectively emphasizing parts of dialogue, creators help viewers quickly and immersively grasp content. Additionally, creators guide viewers’ understanding of nonverbal and paralinguistic cues by providing structural segmentation and popular expressions. These findings reveal that YouTube subtitles play a crucial role beyond simple visual support, enhancing interaction and viewer engagement.
