BLDC Motor Sizing Analysis on P1 Topology Hybridization of Single Cylinder ICE

The hybridization process of a motorcycle with a P1 configuration identifies the performance of an electric motor at the same speed point or more on an internal combustion engine (ICE). The targeted speed is the highest torque point on the ICE. This condition is often called torque assist. Most starter motors on conventional motorcycles operate at cranking speed. The use of starter motors in the latest technology uses a BLDC electric motor. The advancement of controllers and starter motor topology enables the BLDC electric motor to run at its maximum torque point speed on the ICE. Generally., ICE designs that have BLDC electric motors use P1 hybrid topology or are often called integrated starter-generator (ISG). The paper focuses on the analysis of the sizing of BLDC electric motors to be able to operate as ISGs at the highest torque point speed on the ICE. The constraints in the paper are in the form of operating voltage parameters., wire diameter., and number of turns. Changes in these values achieve a greater motor torque equal to its base torque and a motor speed greater than its base speed. The sizing results show an increase in speed of up to 3000 rpm with operating temperature conditions for 60 minutes maintained at 50.2 °C. The reduction in fuel consumption during vehicle dynamics testing reached 1,376% in the ECE-R15 driving cycle, 1,033 in the ECE-R40 driving cycle, and 1,217 in the WMTC driving cycle.
